He was predeceased by: his brothers, Leon Shanks and Donald Shanks. He is survived by: his brother Mike Shanks (Kris) of Rockmart Ga; his children, Carol Stewart of Valley, Sherri Noles (Danny) of Birmingham Al, Shannon Hicks (Tommy) of Roanoke and Jimmy Stewart of Auburn; his grandchildren, Joy Stewart, John Owen Stewart, Parker Noles, Chandler Noles, Tyler Noles, Alex Anthony and Aden Anthony; his sister-in-law Betty Shanks Bond; and his parents, Henry L. Shanks and Lillie Pearle Boone Shanks.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
