He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Strother Averitt and Arzetta Averitt; his wife Mary Jane Kelly; his children, Andrew Morrison Averitt (Kristen), Michael Shannon Averitt (Mitzi), Stefanie Michelle Gaddy (Jamie) and Karen K. Counselman (Mark); and his sister Linda Barnes. He was also cherished by 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
