He is survived by: his wife Linda Thomas Grote; his son Stephen Philip Grote of LaGrange; his stepchildren, Harlan Mason, Jay Mason, Lane Hamnett and Tim Hamnett; his grandchildren, Sarah Boyd Mason, John Mason, Thomas Mason, Courtney Mason, Hugo Hamnett, KJ Hamnett and Emerson Hamnett; Helen Joy Phillips Grote.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Phil's memory to Table of Grace, Food Ministry, Box 1234, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403; or to Talladega College, Office of Institutional Advancement, 627 West Battle Street, Talladega, AL 35160 with a note designating that the gift is in memory of Dr. Nicholas Philip Grote.
