He was predeceased by : his parents, Ollie Jeff Phillips and Gertrude Ida Williams Phillips; and his siblings, OJ "Sonny" Phillips, Harvey Phillips, Katherine McGowan, June Greene, Earl Phillips and Robert Phillips.

He is survived by : his siblings, Betty Jane Coston and James "Shorty" Phillips, Sr. (Debbie); and his nieces and nephews, Amanda Latham Frith (Chris), Eric Wayne Brooks (Beverly), James M. Phillips, Jr., Tammy Phillips Sellers (John), Barbara Ann Smith (Gerald), Elizabeth Ann "Sissy" Collins (Jim), Michael Lynn Greene, Carolyn "Sue" Chambers (Rodney), Alan McGowan and Sue Ann Osburn.
