He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Braxton and Loree DuBose Oakes; his grandson Brayden Oakes; his brother-in-law James Wilson; and his father-in-law Donald McCulley.
He is survived by: his wife Donna Oakes; his children, Jeff Oakes, Rhonda Oakes Dooley, Jonathan Oakes (Misty), Tracie Hollingsworth (Eric), Kellie Wright (Lee), Shellie Sullivan (Jesse III), Kerry Gosa and Katelyn Jolley (William "Billly"); his sister Dorothy Wilson; and his mother-in-law June McCulley. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
