He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles A. "Bud" and Genie Ethel Hawthorne; and his sons, James Curtis Hawthorne, Charles David Hawthorne and Anthony Eugene Hawthorne.
He is survived by: his wife JoAnn Hawthorne; his children, Joseph Stephen Hawthorne (Fonda) of Ashdown, AR and Rita Anne Runnels (Michael) of Conover, NC; and his siblings, H. L. Hawthorne of Bourg, LA and Cloteal Melder of Milledgeville, GA. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
