He was predeceased by: his parents, James Slay and Maddie Slay; his wife Nellie Dell Slay; his daughters, Margaret Slay and Rebecca Slay; and his siblings, Wanda Crush, Ora Mae Roberts and Bobby Eugene Slay.

He is survived by: his children, James Slay (Sarah), Deanna Slay and Ruth Martin; and his grandsons, James Wayne Beard, James Michael Slay and Tommy Algae.
