He was predeceased by: his parents, Athel Lee and Bonnie Mae Nelson Kennedy; and his sister Donna Sue Copeland. He is survived by: his wife Caroline Sue Holt Kennedy; his sons, James Athel Kennedy, Jr. (Joy) of Cordova and Andrew Leigh Kennedy (Marie) of Cabot; and his granddaughter Kara Kennedy.
