He was predeceased by: his father George "Ed" Holmes; and his son Tom Bates. He is survived by: his mother Mary Holmes (Piffer); his wife Karen Bates; his children, Glenn Holmes, Todd Hern, Nyla Wlodarczyk and Dean Ramsey (Denae); and his brother James Holmes. He is also survived by eight grandchildren.
