Frank Edward Julio Obituary

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Frank Edward Julio, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Frank passed away at age 87 on March 23, 2022 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born September 24, 1934 to Joe and Lucille (Coelho) Julio in Dos Palos, CA. His grandmother, Rosa Coelho, was a recognized mid-wife in this area at that time and had the privilege of delivering her own grandson.

Frank lived the vast majority of his life in Gustine. He prided himself in his strong work ethic. He left school at the age of 16 to support running the family farm when his father took ill for an extended period. He worked at a small local gas station (Machado & Mello) for a couple years and was later drafted into the Army where he served a two-year tour driving a supply truck in Germany. While in the military he obtained his high school degree. Upon return to civilian life, he began driving a propane truck and performing service calls for Van Gas (later known as Suburban Propane). He was recognized for his strong customer service and friendly demeanor (pulling up a chair and getting to know customers was his forte). In 1975 he and his wife, Annette, purchased his parents’ ranch in Gustine. This was roughly 8 years after his father’s untimely death at the age of 65.

Frank was self-taught in many areas and quite a handyman. He invested many late nights upgrading the main home and ranch to better suit his family’s needs. All the while he kept his mother close by in the 2nd home on the property until very close to her passing in 2001. He was the quintessential multi-tasker – balancing quite successfully family, cattle, crops, home/ ranch improvements and his outside employment. Frank retired from the propane industry after 40 years of service. Upon retirement it didn’t take long for him to get his foot back in the door. Frank took the knowledge he gained in the propane industry and his strong mechanical and welding skills and created Julio Manufacturing (a custom fabrication business that manufactures propane tools and cabinets). He loved creating new things and improving processes. He tinkered with and built a custom hoe that family and friends swear by. Frank took a hands-on role in the Julio Manufacturing business until just a few months ago.

Frank’s real passion was spending time with family and friends. He loved catching up on the goings on, a good laugh, a nice meal and an occasional nightcap. He was a pillar of knowledge, and family and friends leaned in for his input regularly. He loved to dance – he and Annette were two of the smoothest dancers you may ever see and were a blast to watch. Frank adored all aspects of working on the 40-acre family farm, including nightly golf cart rides around the property with Annette and his dog (Sophia). He found beauty in nature and observed it everywhere. He and Annette drove regularly to the San Luis Forebay to watch the elk, found great joy in rides back in the hills with his son (Frank Joseph), and enjoyed immensely taking in the scenery from the front deck at the ranch. Frank was an avid gardener and skilled pruner.

Frank was very connected to his faith. He attended Mass regularly and was a member of Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles Parish and the Our Lady of Miracles Society.

Frank is survived by his wife Annette – the love of his life. They would have been married 62 years on May 21st. He leaves behind his three children - Juliann Xavier (Emanuel), AnnMarie Goldberg (Dan), and Frank Joseph Julio (Jill); four grandchildren - Nathan Xavier, Hannah Xavier, Emily Julio, and Jonas Goldberg; his sister Linda Toews (Ed), brother Tony Julio (Frieda), and his side kick Sophia (the family pet).

A Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 10:00 am followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:00 am, Thursday, April 28th at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine. A private burial will be held on an alternate date at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.
