He was predeceased by : his parents, Roy Coats and Margaret Coats; his wife Joan; and his grandson Jeffrey Coats. He is survived by : his children, Donna Forster (Dan) of Wilton, California, Donald Coats, Jr. (Melinda) of Georgetown, California, Jeff Coats (Sarah) of Tuolumne City, California and Claudene Lien (Rob) of Gardnerville, Nevada. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
