She was predeceased by: her parents, Sophie Graalfs and Dietrich Graalfs; and her husband Thomas Hobson Bates, Jr.. She is survived by: her children, Sylvia Bates Christiansen Smith of Merced and Gregory Thomas Bates (Saira) of Napa; her grandchildren, Jenna (Joshua), Steven (Crystal), Timothy (Melissa), Nicholas, Jennifer, Chanda (Nate), Sabina and Uma; and her half-sister Maria. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren.
