Michael G. Mettelmann Obituary
Michael (Mike) George Metelmann, passed away on July 15, 2023, in Roseville, California, at the age of 80.
Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn, of Folsom, his daughter, Katharine Frias (Eric) of El Dorado Hills, two grandsons, Giovanni Frias and Christian Frias, who lovingly called him "Papa Mike", and his sister Kristin Pung (John) of Denver Colorado.
Born in Milwaukee to George and Ruth Metelmann, Mike, his brother Scot (now deceased) and sister Kristin, moved with their parents to Castro Valley, California, when he was 10 years old. He attended local schools, and after his high school graduation, enrolled at Chabot College. Later he transferred to San Francisco State College before enlisting in the Army in 1967. After serving his country, he continued his education at California State College, Hayward, where he met Carolyn. When they both had received their degrees, they were married. They settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, first in Alameda, later in Oakland and then in San Leandro.
In 2013, Mike and Carolyn moved to their retirement home in Folsom, CA. Mike retired from the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services where, among his many accomplishments, he co-authored a California Senate Bill which was signed into law by the governor in 1983. Mike grew to love gardening and was fortunate to have Barry Friesen, our neighbor and professor of horticulture, teach him how to plant, prune and maintain a garden. The merits of his work were displayed in an Ortho Garden book. He also enjoyed dirt bike riding with his brother, traveling around California and Nevada for Enduro events. Being naturally competitive and a dog lover, the sport of agility was the perfect hobby for Mike. For 14 years, he and his Sheltie, Beau, and later his Border Collie, Belle, enjoyed traveling the west coast to compete and most often win or place in events. A voracious reader, Mike liked researching various topics and enjoyed the works of many global authors, while also keeping up with several daily periodicals. He enjoyed listening to music and had a collection of many genres that spanned decades. His wonderful sense of humor and the ability to capture the attention of his friends and family with storytelling is sorely missed.
In a private military ceremony, Mike was inurned at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
Services have been entrusted to the care of Grissom's Chapel & Mortuary.
