He is survived by : his former life partner Brittany Stangeland; his daughter Brooke of Pound Ridge; his grandson Hudson Shaw Portale; his mother Lilah; his siblings-in-law, Cyndi Olsen and Brad Stangeland; his nephews, Josh Meili (Destiny) and Jason Meili of Minneapolis; his niece Tara Murff (Odeck Ariawan) of Bali; his great-niece Paisley Meili; his grandson Packer; and also, Brooke Stangeland, Dave Olsen of Laguna Niguel and Colleen Stangeland of Eugene.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Brett's name.
