He was predeceased by : his mother Eleanor McGee (Hitch). He is survived by : his wife Patricia; his children, James Jr. (Peggy) and Kristin Hummel; and his father O. L. McGee. He is also survived by five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 27th 2024 at 3:00 PM at the MacKenzie Place (1605 Elm Crk Vw, Colorado Springs, CO 80907).

He was active in the Downtown Kiwanis Club, the UTEP Miner Foundation, and University Presbyterian Church, where he served on the session.
