He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Themel and Agnes Themel (Boyle); his wife Hildegard Pauline Frieda Busch; and his son Arthur Eugene. He is survived by: his children, James Richard Themel Jr. and Jenny Louise Themel Moore (Jeffrey Robert Moore) of Colorado Springs; his grandchildren, Rhett Themel, Caroline Themel, Adrianna Ernstberger, Jacqueline Themel, Emma Themel, Ethan Moore, Katie Boydston, Kylene Moore, Karissa Moore and Evan Moore; and his great grandchildren, Liam Themel, Aria Themel, Ivy Themel and Amelia Moore.

Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation in memory of James Themel.
