Hockley Native wrote a sympathy message

“I think about him all the time. He was the most outside the box teacher I ever had. His humanities class in high school gave me the opportunity to come out of my shell, expand my mind, in a world that was crazy at the time and is getting crazier. He was bold and unafraid. That is rare. I cherish the memories we had. I thank you for the tools you gave me and still use them. Ill see you again my friend. God Speed Louie.”

April Poulos wrote a sympathy message

“I am truly saddened to find this obituary of my most favorite teacher. Mr. Devanney was one of the only mentors I went back to visit after graduating high school in 2000. He had a fierce personality and showed me how to stand up for what was right. He is a treasured role model who displayed confidence i hoped to emulate. I remember Louis would come sit in my section at the restaurant I worked. He genuinely cared for my well-being and knew how to positively encourage me to do more.”

“Mr. Devanney, thank you for being a light in my life and so many others’. You always had a twinkle in your eye and a kind word of encouragement for me. I remember so much from your class and have carried your advice with me through the years. I’m going to keep believing that the front row parking spaces will open up when I need them, which surprisingly, they often do. :-) The good you put into the Universe won’t be forgotten. RIP.”

“Mr. Devanney was the Humanities Instructor at Georgetown High School in 1986. He taught us how to observe shadows in film (Casablanca). He is one of my favorite teachers. The weird/artsy kids were in his class. I would do nothing different. RIP Mr. Devanney.”

Kelly Elias wrote a sympathy message

“Louie came into my family’s life in the late 1950’s, because his father was a Catholic doctor in predominantly protestant Amarillo, Texas – and so was my father, Dr. Jere B. Johnson. Through this medical and religious connection, my family met Louie, his parents, brother Tom and his sisters Annie and Sarah (who was a nun for a while). But for me, Louie was by far the person in his family that I connected with the most. Almost like I knew him from some other time and place. ~Donald Johnson”

Carmen Herrera wrote a sympathy message

“I am in shock to learn that my first true love has passed. I met him in college at The University of Texas in 1975, and we became engaged in January of 1976 and were to be married March 13, 1976. He called off the wedding, which was in progress, invitations, cake ordered, etc. it truly broke my heart. I have never married and am now 69. I fell for him because he was so smart, sophisticated, mannered and we would dance to Tony Bennett. He was a good dancer and kisser. Carmen Herrera”
