He was predeceased by : his parents, Jacob Frederick and Myra Mallory Schaefer (Maxon); his wife Janet Eileen Schaefer (Stone); his children, Virgil Jr. and Deborah Trejo; and his son-in-law Edwin E. Raichart.

He is survived by : his children, Cheryl Raichart, Charles Schaefer, Stanley Schaefer, Laura Mondragon (Jesse) and Brenda Garfio (Erasmo); his son-in-law Guadalupe Trejo; and his sister-in-law Thyra Schaefer. He is also survived by 17 Grandchildren, 24 Great Grandchildren.
