He was predeceased by: his parents, Katherine Walpole and Henry W. O'Brien; his sisters, Catherine Morrow and Mary Vaughn; and his siblings-in-law, Dr. James Morrow, Joseph Vaughn, Dr. Edward Haegel and Eleanor Haegel.
He is survived by: his wife Nancy Haegel O'Brien; his children, Anne O'Brien of West Hartford, Attorney Gregory O'Brien (Kelly Prindiville) of Fairfield, Pamela Riley (Attorney John Riley) of Hamden and Daniel O'Brien (Dawn Acquarulo) of Guilford; and his grandchildren, Tess, Oliva, Hope Riley, Dylan, Bridget Rose, Connor and Grace O'Brien. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
