Essie Pearl Brown Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Essie Pearl Brown (Washington, District of Columbia), who passed away on March 10, 2024, at the age of 83, leaving to mourn family and friends. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family.ssie Pearl Brown was born on February 16, 1941, on her
parent’s farm in Turkey, North Carolina. Essie was the fifth of eleven
children born to the late Rev. George Atkins Boomer and Deaconess
Lucy Jane Faison Boomer. Both parents laid a strong foundation and
were Godly examples for their children to seek, follow, and love the
LORD with their whole hearts.
During her formative years, Essie accepted Jesus Christ as her LORD
and Savior and was baptized in a creek alongside the road by Rev.
Samuel M. White and became a member of the First Baptist Church
of Turkey where she served faithfully.
Essie received her formal education in Faison, N.C., and graduated
Salutatorian from Hargrove High School in 1959.
After high school, Essie moved to Washington, D.C., and found
employment with Mack’s Carryout, BJ’s Men’s Clothing, ABC Beauty
& Barber Supply, and Montgomery Ward.
Her greatest joy was when she gained full-time employment with
the Department of Employment Services (D.O.E.S.) as an
Unemployment Claims Specialist. It was here where she ministered
daily to those who had no source of income that GOD would make a
way if they would only trust HIM.
At Christmas time she would purchase toys and encourage her
fellow co-workers to do the same so any kid coming into the office
would receive a gift. After many years of service, Essie retired from
D.O.E.S.
Essie continued her education and enrolled in a four (4) year course
of study at the Washington Baptist Seminary under the instruction
of Dr. Andrew Fowler and on June 12, 1989, she received her
diploma in Theological Studies.
Essie was the proud mother of five children: Cassandra, Regina,
William D., Eric J., and Shannon R.
Essie later met and married Walter R. Brown, Jr on July 21, 1989.
They would have celebrated 35 years of marriage this July.
Essie was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church for over 60 years. In
that time she faithfully served in the following ministries: Angel
Tree, Cancer Support, Charity, FUM #7, Follow-Up, New Members,
Nurses (40+ yrs), Street Ministry, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible
School.

It was under the leadership of Constance Ragsdale that the nurses of
Mt. Sinai began visiting with the residents of the Washington Center
for the Aging to hold church services on Saturdays. Essie was able to
use this outreach opportunity to spread GOD’S word. On November 12,
2023, Essie was given the title Nurse Emeritus during the combined
Nurses and Ushers Day service.
Essie believed in the power of prayer. It was her “Super Power.” When
she was diagnosed with breast cancer and later endometrial cancer
she prayed her way through with the help of her family and her fellow
cancer survivors in the Cancer Support ministry. Through His grace
and mercy, she was a two-time cancer survivor.
Before and during COVID-19 Essie kept up her card ministry. If you
were sick, had a birthday, experienced bereavement, or you just
happened to cross her mind she would mail off a card to keep you
encouraged and remind you to stay strong and never waver in your
faith in the LORD.
Essie was a true “PRAYER WARRIOR.”
She was predeceased by her brother George A. Boomer, sisters Lucy A.
Taylor and baby girl Boomer, and great-grandson Crew A. Bailey. She
leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Walter R. Brown, Jr. Five
children: Cassandra, Regina, William “Dex” (Alecia), Eric, and Shannon.
Adopted sons Robert & Kevin Bridges. Her godson Wayne (Jamie). Her
grandchildren Tanika, Nakia, Eric Jr, Carl, Jr., Ashley, Jamesa (Justin),
Darius, Devontae’, Destinee’ (Daryl), Justin, and Aaron. Great-
grandchildren Khia, Amira, Xaivier, Zuri, Zion, Brysen, Camden,
Azariyah, Adin, and Nova, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces,
