He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse R. Carnes and Katherine Jansen Carnes; his wife Mary Ruth Johnson Carnes; and his siblings, Jesse Carnes, Charles Carnes and Sarah Carnes.
He is survived by: his children, James D. Carnes, Jr., Sylvia Sleigh (Clifford) of Parrish, FL, Catherine Simmons (Jim) and Penny Rhoden (Lewis). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
