He was predeceased by : his sons, John and Gerard; his grandchildren, Mattie Aiello and Ricky Nickels; and his brothers, Tom and Jim.

He is survived by : his wife Mary A. (Mac); his children, Richard (Barbara), Paul (Colleen Croniger), Carl III (Pam), Christopher (Jackie) and Caroline Nickels; his stepchildren, Ginny Barkman (late Bob), Sheila Timony, Michael (Amy), Maureen Timony (Patrick Conroy) and Molly Tomony (Jim); and his brother Fred Nickels.

A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, May 15th 2024 at 10:30 AM at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church (12171 Iona Rd, Fort Myers, FL 33908).

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends gifts to the general scholarship fund at St. Ignatius High School, 1911 W 30th St, Cleveland, OH 44113 or to Hope Hospice, via hopehospice.org or by mail at Hope Development Department, 9470 Healthpark Circle, Ft. Myers, FL 33908.
