He was predeceased by : his children, Michael Rutledge, Ivan Rutledge and Katherine Jenkins; and his brothers, James "Tiny" and Abraham Rutledge.

He is survived by : his children, John Wendall Rutledge Jr., Eric Rutledge, Chris Ritledge, Phyllis Moore, Myra Corbo and Holly Rutledge; and his siblings, Edward "Rusty" Rutledge, Lavond Stein, Mary Higdon, Ila Green, Sue Guess, Ethel Ralph and Bobbie Jean Smith. He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
