He was predeceased by: his parents, Sherman Payne and Audra Vandergriff Payne; and his son Micah. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Mull Payne; his sons, Roger Payne (Tammie), John Rodda (Kelly) and Chris Rodda; his grandchildren, Haley Brindle (Christian), Alec, Carrie, Erin, Landon Payne, Lauren, Gavin, Brooke, John and Tyler Rodda; and his siblings, Linda Maresca (Larry), Sandra Hulse, Bobby, Billy and Ted Payne. He is also survived by His wife, children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Colonel Payne preferred donations be made in his memory to benefit Neurosurgery education at USF Health. Gary's request is made to honor Dr. Don Smith, who provided Gary tremendously improved quality of life with two brain surgeries to treat his Parkinson's disease.
