He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Mergenthaler and Lorraine Mergenthaler. He is survived by: his wife Janet Hayek Mergenthaler; his brother Marc Mergenthaler (Sharon) of Morrison Colorado; and his brothers-in-law, Ronald Hayek (Charlotte) and Arthur Hayek (Beverly). He is also survived by eleven nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews.
