He was predeceased by: his parents, Emil H. Merkle and Jane Marie Merkle (Brown); and his siblings, Emil Merkle, Lorna Woodard (Reese), Tom Merkle, Jim Merkle (Ruth), Richard Schmidt, Allan Raymond and Carol Dwan (Mike).
He is survived by: his wife Mary Lynn Raymond Merkle; his children, D. Gordon Merkle Jr. (Jimmy Reed), Chris Merkle and Sarah Merkle (Brian Murphey); his grandchildren, Sam and Zach Murphey; his siblings, Bill Merkle (Margaret) and Carole Schmidt; and his siblings-in-law, Anna Merkle, Jane Raymond and Randy Raymond (Patti). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
