He was predeceased by: his parents, Frederick Gustave Mertins, Jr. and Eleanor Binns Mertins. He is survived by: his cousins, Carroll Binns (Brenda), Louis Mertins, Jr., Anne M. Goddard and John Louis Goddard.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 825 Greene Street, Augusta, GA 30901.
