He was predeceased by : his parents, Walter Clyde Highsmith and Lillian Rushing Highsmith; his son Walter Jerome Highsmith Jr.; his granddaughter Savannah Sue Highsmith; and his siblings, Donald Highsmith, Edna Highsmith and Jean Highsmith.

He is survived by : his wife Carole Susan Highsmith of Broxton, GA; his children, Thomas Highsmith (Bonnie Kay) of Broxton, GA and Kimberly Renee Harrell (Gerry) of Douglas, GA; and his brother Floyd Highsmith of Savannah, GA. He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
