He is survived by: his pet Sugar; his wife Jackie Mealor Smith; his children, Matthew Allen (Candice Smith), Jeremy Carter of Carnesville and Andrea Carter of Toccoa; his siblings, Tim Smith of Toccoa and Janet; and his brother-in-law Jack Polly of Toccoa. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
