He was predeceased by : his parents, Matthew Abernathy and Irene Abernathy; his wife Diane Baston Abernathy; and his stepson Jimmy Thomas. He is survived by : his stepchildren, Willie Thomas (Charlotte), Nicky James (Kecia), Travis James and Tammy Wilson (Shad) of Carnesville, GA; his grandchildren, Michael (Hope Wilson), Cody (Cassidy James), Kaytlin (Will Ballenger), Emily Thomas, Amy Thomas and Willie Thomas Jr.; and his brother Chuck (Connie Abernathy).

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church.
