He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard T. Peterson and Alma Leggett Peterson. He is survived by: his wife Ruth G. Peterson of Douglas, GA; his sons, Steven James Peterson (Jennifer) of Douglas, GA, Richard Allen Peterson (Frances) of Douglas, GA and James Sammie Peterson Jr. (Heather) of Douglas, GA; and his grandchildren, Santana Peterson of Douglas, GA and Tony Peterson (Ashley) of Waycross, GA. He is also survived by 2 nieces, and 1 nephew.
