He was predeceased by: his parents, Clifford Troy Payne and Velma Ludell Rutledge Payne; and his siblings, Clarence Payne, Lawton Payne of Burnell Payne, J. C and Delsie Payne.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Ellen Mankin Payne of Douglasville, Georgia; and his children, Patti (Jim Bearden), Jeni (Herb Goldstein), Rob (Carey Payne) and Ed (Pam Payne). He is also survived by ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Ephesus Baptist Church in Villa Rica, Georgia.
