He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar O'Neal Burkhalter and Aire Frances Howell. He is survived by: his children, Marie O'Connell (Rich Jeffers), Todd Burkhalter (Amy), Jeff Burkhalter (Melissa) and John Burkhalter (Linda); and his grandchildren, Cameron O'Connell, Cody O'Connell, Courtney O'Connell, Colyn O, Connell, Bryce Burkhalter, Austin Burkhalter, Conner Burkhalter, Chase Burkhalter, Leah Burkhalter, Sarah Raye Burkhalter and Elizabeth Burkhalter.
