He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Henry Gardner and Jeanette Stanton Gardner; and his daughter Allison Bell. He is survived by: his brother Richard Gardner (Cynthia); his children, Amy Elrod (Jason) and Robert Gardner; his grandchildren, Hayden Elrod, Conner and Adalynn Gardner; and his nieces, Kristen Gaylor (Anthony) and Kimberly Gardner.
