He was predeceased by: his parents, Will Maxwell and Maxie Maxwell; his brother Hugh Maxwell; and his children, Terry and Connie.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Maxwell; his son Gerald Wayne Maxwell, Jr. (Marie); and his grandchildren, Chris, Heather, Heidi, Amberlynn, Will and Ben. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, and a host of extended friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
