He was predeceased by: his parents, Milton Carpenter and Luella Hoffman Carpenter (Hoffman); and his former wife Jacqueline Carpenter (Humphrey). He is survived by: his wife Jackie Carpenter; his sons, Eric Carpenter (Vanessa), Jeffrey Carpenter and Hondo Carpenter; his grandson Edgar Carpenter Jr.; his sister Phyllis Calkins (Jerry); his sons, Edgar Carpenter, Sr. (Lanita), John D. Carpenter, Jr. (Beverly), Timothy Carpenter and Malcom Carpenter (Robin); and his stepchildren, Dennis Smith (Becky), Denice Thorne (Michael), Dean Smith (Gina Lynn) and Deana Wheeler (Jeremy). He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and other family members.
