He was predeceased by: his parents, George Melvin Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Cleland. He is survived by: his wife Shirley; his children, James and Kelly; his sons-in-law, Mark Cordeiro and Michael Moralez; and his grandchildren, Julian, Mikayla and Brendan.

Visitation was held on Sunday, July 13th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Lunning Funeral Chapel (2620 Mt Pleasant St, Burlington, IA 52601). A funeral service was held on Monday, July 14th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
