He was predeceased by: his parents, Hilar N. Smith and Mary Emerence Smith (Engler); his siblings, Louis Smith (Florence), Cletus Smith, Emmett Smith (Betty), George Smith (Lavina), Jeanette Fangmann (Louis), Germaine McElmeel (Joe) and Eileen Watson (Bud); his sister-in-law Leona Smith; and also Virgil Hunt.
He is survived by: his wife Rose Smith of Cascade, IA; his children, David G. Smith (Sharon Maroney) of Blue Grass, IA, Edward J. Smith (Janet) of Apple Valley, MN, Daniel R. Smith (Barb) of Davenport, IA, Diane Smith-Brown (Roy) of Davenport, IA and Amy R. Butterfield (Torrey) of Pewaukee, WI; and his siblings, Howard "Bud" Smith of Florida and Carlyn Hunt of Edgewood, IA.. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.
