He was predeceased by: his siblings-in-law, Bob Phillips and Fran Schmidt. He is survived by: his wife Karen (Auto); his son Kevin (Julie) of North Liberty; his grandchildren, Dylan and Alaina; his son Rodney (Amy); his grandchildren, Isabel, Joseph and Curran of Cedar Rapids; and his siblings, Earl Schmidt, Don Schmidt (Rita), Renee Phillips and Randy Schmidt (Becky). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.
