He was predeceased by: his parents, Marion Hanke (Carden) and James F. Hanke Sr.; his brother Bill; his sister-in-law Mary Hanke; and his niece Lisa Clark (Kenny).
He is survived by: his wife Miriam; his children, Eran Hanke, Dara Schmidt (Brandon) and Nathan Hanke (Elaine); his grandchildren, Elliot, Hugo, Nora Schmidt, Evan and Preston Hanke (family: Becki Elkins); his great grandchildren, Lukas and Jackson; his granddaughter Bethany Schmidt Self (Jason); his friends, Arden Jasper, Darle Elkins and Dale Gentry; his cousins, Bob Carden (Sondra), Dean Carden (Jan) and Diane Richardson (Denny); and his sibling's children, Christine Thompson (Greg), Bill Hanke, Bruce Hanke, Linda Shillington (Wedge), Meg Hanke, Molly Clampitt (Jeremy), Christopher Hanke and Katie Fenn (Chad).
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 1st 2025 from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Red Cedar Lodge (1700 Big Bluestem Dr, Marion, IA 52302). A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 2nd 2025 at 10:30 AM at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church (1340 3rd Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403).
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Heifer Project, the National Parks Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
