He was predeceased by : his parents, John Herman and Viola Carolina Heinz Ratzel; his brother-in-law Glenn Newkirk; and his nephew Todd Newkirk. He is survived by : his wife Alice; his daughters, Meredith Ann Ratzel Caskey (Ben), Frytown and Emily Nicole Ratzel Mozena (Ben); his grandchildren, Olivia, Griffin Caskey, Maya and Eleanor Mozena; his sister Maxine Newkirk; and his nephews, Tim Newkirk and Thad Newkirk.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to be distributed to organizations that were important to him.
