He was predeceased by : his parents, Fred Ertl and Gertrude Ertl (Sauser); his parents-in-law, Alfred and Delores Bierman; his grandchildren, Toby and Elisa Ertl; his brothers, Fred, Bob and Alan Ertl; and his in-laws, Nancy Ertl, Loras Benn and Gary McClure.

He is survived by : his wife Patricia Bierman of Valentine's Day; his children, Deb Moser (Chris) of Guttenberg, Jim Ertl (Jackie Adams) of Guttenberg, Tom Ertl (Lynn) of Guttenberg and Bill Ertl of Guttenberg; his grandchildren, Jessica Brossett (Matt), Nicole Shepherd (Josh), David Moser (Allen Dolphin), Justin Ertl, Ethan Ertl, Emily Ertl, Olivia Ertl and Gavin Ertl; his siblings, Joe Ertl (Helen) and Carol Lundergan (Mike); and his in-laws, Darlene Ertl, Sue Ertl, Diane Overman (Don), Linda McClure and Doug Bierman (Deb). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg, or St. Croix Hospice.
