He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Schmitt and Vera Schmitt (Freie); and his sister Elaine Behn. He is survived by: his wife Dixie Ann Mason; his children, Teri Fender (Rory) of Hampton, Tamra Schmitt of Hampton, Traci Kloetzer (Bob) of Hampton, Toni Paulsen (Jorgen) of Forest City and Todd Schmitt of Hampton; his grandchildren, Jennifer Spieker (Garth), Jessica Janssen, Kaleb Kloetzer (Stephanie), Paige Hoshaw, Kaeli Waechter (Casey), Payton Paulsen, Piper Paulsen, Shayla Schmitt, Tate Schmitt and Tucker Schmitt; and his brother Wendell Schmitt of Hampton. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, Lutheran Hour Ministries and the Franklin County Fair.
