With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Betty Jean Novotny (Marion, Iowa), born in Atkins, Iowa, who passed away on September 2, 2019 at the age of 84. Family and friends are welcome to send flowers or leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Wallace Ness and Leona Ness (Schlotterback); her husband Richard Novotny; her son Mark Novotny; and her siblings, Donna Geater and Ron Ness.

She is survived by: her children, Becky Dotson of Marion, Scott Novotny of Cedar Rapids and Mike Novotny of Marion; her granddaughters, Melanie Long (Joe) of Nokomis, Jessica Novotny of Streamwood and Nicole Zilinger (Chris) of Bourbonnais, Illinois; her sister Dianne Beatty of Atkins; and her sisters-in-law, Carol Ness of Marion and Phyllis Wells of Marion. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

“I was saddened to hear of Betty’s passing. I was Michael’s first teacher at Bowman Woods, and he was my first student. I still have a ceramic basket from him and his Mom.
