He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Merritt and Rose Merritt (Mitchell); his wife Lucille Merritt; his children, Robert, Bill Merritt and Barb Norman; and his grandson David Norman.
He is survived by: his children, Beverly Peters (Gary) of Ames, Becky Rawson (Alan) of Alburnett, Bradley Merritt (Theresa) of Springville and Betty Kirklin (Jason) of Robins, Iowa; and his children-in-law, Sandy Merritt of Marion, Cindy Merritt of New York and Jerry Norman of Whittier, Iowa. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
