He was predeceased by: his wife Arlene; his son Nile; his grandson Jacob; his daughter Marilyn; and his siblings, Larry, Mireta Niebuhr and Verna Belle Schmidt.
He is survived by: his children, Carol Leonhardt of Marion, Linda Thompson (Leonard) of Anamosa and Michael Merck (Linda) of Marion; his grandchildren, Jeremy Merck of Kansas City, Heather Plathe (Bryce) of Mt, Angie Merck-Dunlap (Jason) of Minnetonka, Ryan Kriz of Solon, Savannah Scheufler (Ray) of Johnston, Christopher Merck of Marion, McKenna Merck of Marion and Katie King (Harry) of Paris; his great grandchildren, Mia Merck, Avery Plathe, Gavin Plathe, Damion Logue, Kryan Logue, Delaney Kriz, Piper Kriz, Ryan King and Victoria King; and his parents, Ernest Merck and Esther Merck.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous or St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
