He was predeceased by: his son Joseph Hammer; his father Edgar Hammer Sr.; and his mother-in-law Opal Fields. He is survived by: his wife Pam Fields; and his sons, Michael Hammer (Candy) of Marshalltown and Bob Hammer (Cindy) of Iowa City.
