He was predeceased by : his parents, David Gerst and Hattie Gerst (Hardin); his wife Dorothy Ellen "Dot" Malcom; his sister Betty Street; and his granddaughter Hannah Louise Gerst.
He is survived by : his children, Rod Gerst (Kate) of Burlington, Marty Gerst (Brenda) of Temple Terrace and Rebecca Gerst of Mediapolis; his grandchildren, Carolyn Gerst of Olathe, Shelby Gerst (Michelle) of Parrish, Molly Gerst and Zachary Gerst (Brittany) of Burlington; and his siblings, Raymond (Mary) of Burlington, Dick (Diane) of Springfield, Davy (Joyce) of Lomax, Jim (Donna) of Hedrick, Johnny (Joanne) of Danville, Janet Shipman of Mediapolis, Carol Hartman of Fairfield, Ruthann Schroeder of Vinton, Kathy Brown (Dave) of Danville and Mary Lynn Grooms of Wapello.
Dot and Roger were lifetime residents of Oakville until their home flooded in 2008, and they moved to Mediapolis. .Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice and the Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County.
