He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Orlan Gilbert and Irene Gilbert; his wife Sharon Gilbert (Michel); his children, Gina Ellingson (Rick), Michel Gilbert (Linda), Ginger Manning (Jeff) and Shannon Gilbert (Jill); his grandchildren, Beau Ellingson, Chelsea McElmeel, Carson Ellingson, Dawson Ellingson, Chris Deaton, Kyle Deaton, Kincade Gilbert, Leo Manning, Nichole Gilbert and Natalie Gilbert; and his children, Northboro and Sharon. He was also cherished by four great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, family will establish memorial fund for the benefit of John's grandchildren at Century Bank in Shenandoah, Iowa in his honor.
