He was loved and cherished by many people including : his sister Lois Broughton (Vermeer); his former life partners, Lee Broughton and Betty Ann Hollaar; his son Paul Vermeer; his grandchildren, Justin Nelson, Spencer Vermeer and Isabelle Vermeer; his former life partner Eric Rankin; his children, Elizabeth Dahl (Eli Dahl), William Rankin and Kohen Rankin; his wife Tricia Vermeer (Berkenpas); and his daughters, Aftyn Vermeer, Samantha Vermeer, Emalee Vermeer and Lydia Vermeer.

Visitation was held on Monday, April 8th 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Centerpoint Church (160 10th St SE, Sioux Center, IA 51250). A prayer was held on Tuesday, April 9th 2024 at 9:30 AM at the same location. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 9th 2024 at 10:30 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Tuesday, April 9th 2024 at the Memory Gardens Cemetery.
